Travel Sustainability

We are committed to sustainable practices as noted on the event home page. Please use public transportation whenever possible and refrain from hiring cars during the event.

Arriving into Ireland and Transport:

Buses: If you are arriving into Dublin, there are direct buses to Limerick (see UWPAA reunion info). We strongly recommend booking bus tickets ahead of time online. Otherwise you may find yourself negotiating with a bus driver, or worse, having to walk to Limerick, which is no craic at all!

Driving: When you arrive in Ireland, you will notice that we drive on the left. This is because we think it’s wrong to be right all the time, and because it’s a bit of craic to confuse the tourists.😊Our rules of the road are similar to most other countries, however, many Irish drivers prefer to make their own rules, so we encourage you to to drive carefully and to stay alert.

You may notice that we have a lot of “roundabouts” (traffic circles in the US). Please remember to drive to the left, and to give way to traffic coming from the right. If you go in the wrong direction, you may find yourself in an Irish hospital, which is not nearly as much craic as the festivities of Alumni Week.

Air Travel

Only a 30 minute drive from the University of Limerick,  Shannon Airport is the closest, with many routes and connections via London and other European cities. Dublin Airport is just over a two hour bus ride from campus and is served by many international routes and connections.

Low-cost airline Ryanair serves both Shannon and Dublin Airports from many European cities (be aware of their luggage allowance if transferring from an international flight!).

Reminders and Visa Info

As always for international travel, we highly recommend that everyone secure travel insurance.

Please Be Aware: You must have a national passport or national identity card to enter Ireland. If you are unsure of what you need to enter, please check here what you may requireNote for those travelling into Northern Ireland or on to Scotland and England, as they are part of the United Kingdom and no longer in the EU, you should check separately what you may require.

Starting in May 2025, travelers from the United States need a special travel authorization—ETIAS, which stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System.

Should you require a VISA to visit Ireland, we are happy to assist with a letter outlining your visit and attendance at Annual Alumni Week—please email events@uwpiaa.org.

Ground Transportation

From Shannon Airport:

  • Bus Éireann operates a bus from Shannon Airport to William Street every 30 minutes. Tickets cost €7 - €11 and the journey takes 44 min. Bus timetables are available here Shannon > Limerick - Route 343

    • If continuing on by bus to UL, you must transfer to the 304-route bus; a 20 min trip from the city centre.

    • Once in the city, you may go to a shop and purchase a Leap Card which will give you reduced rates for travel all over the country. It's a good investment if you will be using public tranportation as well before or after the event.

From Dublin Airport:

  • Both bus options depart from the Coach Park Zone 16—take note  of the name of the stop as the University is quoted differently by the coach companies but both arrive to The Stables on campus at University of Limerick.
  • The JJ Kavanagh coach brings you right on campus to the "UL Stables" stop. Book here
  • Dublin Coach (also known as The Big Green Bus) brings you right on campus to The Stables as well, but they call it the "University of Limerick" stop.
    • To get to the Coach Park from Terminal 1
      • Exit the Arrivals Hall.
      • Cross the pedestrian crossing and enter the multi-storey car park on the opposite side.
      • Walk straight through the building and exit on the other side.
      • Look for the sign saying ‘Coach Park’.
      • Proceed straight across this open area whilst keeping to the pedestrian crossings and paying attention to traffic.
      • Turn left at the footpath. The Coach Park is located around the corner to the right, behind the Chapel.
    • To get to the Coach Park from Terminal 2
      • Make your way to Terminal 1 and follow the instructions above.

  • The 304-route bus departs every 15 minutes from The Stables on campus—a 20 min trip to the city centre.

Additional Travel Notes

If you plan to travel in Ireland after Annual Alumni Week, and you wish to drive, we suggest renting a car for pick up at  Shannon Airport July 27th and not having it for the duration of the events—parking on campus is very limited and even at the  hotels is limited and pricey and we don’t believe you will need a car during those days.

If flying out early/late from Shannon, the Park Inn by Radisson Shannon Airport is a convenient option, as it is located across the car park from the airport.

Be careful crossing roads and streets, remember traffic travels on the left side of the road  – so look left – right & left again before you cross!

If you need to rent a mobility device, https://www.themobilityshop.ie/rentals.html delivers all over Ireland. When you book accommodation, let the accommodation know that a delivery is expected, and make sure all parties know the drop off / collection agreement.
